Missing

napowrimo #17: missing something

I put it down
on the nightstand perhaps
along side
my wedding band
my watch
my wallet
but it is not there

I know that I had it
I held it for so long
and then
I put it down

did I pack it away
with the winter scarves and hats
did I
wrap it in tin foil and stick it in the back
of the refrigerator with yesterday's
left over rice and beans
did I?

did I put it down before
the phone rang
the children cried
the neighbor came
to ask for a donation
before the water
overflowed
in the hair clogged tub
when I was giving
the baby a bath

did I give it away
with the bag that has been waiting
for months to go to the salvation army
drop off
did I drop it
off
the roof that needed to be
reshingled
the house that needed
to be repainted
the chimney that needed
to be repointed

Point me in the right
direction
because I am
missing...
no,
I am missing
the part of me
that makes me
me
and I have to find it.
