Viva La Panama

For this week's C.O.R.A. Diversity Roll Call, let's travel around the world together! Choose a country or region and tell us a little bit about it, including, of course, an author or two who hail from there.





Many associate Panama with Manuel Noriega, but before him, and since him,we are bold, beautiful, beaches; mighty, majestic mountains; and lively, loving, Latinos. Panama has recently been touted as an oasis for retirement, investment opportunities and number one travel destination because of its affordability, its natural beauty, and cosmopolitan restaurants and boutiques.
The people of Panama are diverse. We are an ethnic mix of Indian tribes, West Indian groups, mestizos, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Swiss, and North American immigrants.
If you have not visited, make this your next holiday. You won't be disappointed.

Writer Veronica Chambers is of Panamanian decent and in her books she often explores the Latino-black experience. She is the author of several young adult literature including Mama's Girl, Double Dutch: A Celebration of Jump Rope, Rhyme and Sisterhood, Marisol and Magdalena: The Sound of Our Sisterhood, Quinceanera Means Sweet 15, and Amistad Rising: The Story of Freedom, and The Joy of Doing Things Badly.
Like other authors who delve into their ancestory and racial heritage as foder for their writing, Veronica Chambers seeks to all examine aspects of the blended black and Latino world that she has hailed from.
Veronica Chambers was an editor for The New York Times Magazine, and Premiere magazine. She was also a culture writer for Newsweek.
